Neurofeedback As An Effective Treatment Method Historical Overview Neurofeedback is a system for assessing the state of the brain using a monitoring system, linked to a computer, and by adjusting the frequency and placement of electrodes, begin to regulate the functioning of the brain and training it to perform at its optimal state. [ These electrodes do not carry any electrical charge into the brain; they only collect signals from the brain to the neurofeedback machine. Thus neurofeedback is a totally non-invasive procedure. ] The Neurofeedback System was used to train CEO, NASA Astronauts and even the World Cup Winning Team of Italy, and for many years, was used in the US to train senior management on how to achieve peak performances. Some 4 years ago it was found that the Neurofeedback machines could be an effective alternative treatment for Autism. Please note that Autism is not a disease and do not look for it being able to 'cure Autism'. Most methods are to alleviate the symptoms of Autism. Neurofeedback and Autism The Neurofeedback machines provide us with feedback on various brain waves as they happen in the brain. Examples of these brain waves are the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma waves. Each of these brain waves are specifically predominant in each state of human awareness (sleeping, dreaming, meditating, wide awake). Sometimes these brain waves are dominant in a disportionate manner, thereby causing the person to exhibit symptoms not appropriate for the current situation, their age group, or general behaviour. Examples of sub-optimal state of wellbeing could be manifested in insommia, low self-esteem, mental depression and cognitive deficits (developmental delays, autism, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, brain injury, epileptic fits, strokes, Parkinson's Disease, dementia and other learning disabilities). After several neurofeedback sessions and with the accumulation of rewards, there will be a reduction of symptoms in the client. This will be the beginning of the journey towards normal functioning of the brain. And such improvements are permanent! As to how far or how the fast before a reduction of symptoms can be seen, it would depend on the severity of the condition and the number of sessions taken. In overview, this Autism Therapy is a process in which we train the brain to self regulate and improve its ability to coordinate and control all bodily functions. Results In our treament of Autistic Children and Adults, we have discovered that from as early as one session to ten sessions (depending on individuals), significant improvements to autistic behaviours may be observed. Our proudest achievement was the treatment of an autistic adult to that of an individual able to hold a regular, albeit simple, job as a file clerk after a year of treament.
